Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and home to approximately one-quarter of the Danish population. The population of Copenhagen is around 660,000 in the municipality and 1.4 million in the urban area. Compared to other major cities, it is on a smaller scale, making it easy to get around on foot or by using the efficient public transport system.

As is widely known, Danes are among the happiest people in the world — and one contributing factor may well be the beautiful and historic surroundings of Copenhagen.

In Copenhagen, you will encounter a unique blend of historic and contemporary architecture, cyclists embracing sustainable living, and much more – not to mention an excellent selection of restaurants serving Nordic cuisine.

We strongly recommend taking advantage of already being in Copenhagen for BGE and extending your stay to explore our wonderful capital – for example, by experiencing the following:

Nyhavn

NYHAVN

During you visit you must not miss a trip to Nyhavn that is characterized by the charming and colorful houses right by the water. Here you can both eat and drink in the numerous restaurants.

Tivoli main entrance

TIVOLI

Tivoli is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and placed right in the center of Copenhagen. Tivoli Gardens is not just for the youngest visitors but all age groups will enjoy a day in Tivoli with excitement. Even Walt Disney found Tivoli interesting as it was here he found inspiration for Disney World.

The little mermaid

THE LITTLE MERMAID

The Little Mermaid is without a doubt one of Copenhagen’s most famous attractions and inspired by a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. You will find her at “Langeline” by the waterfront – and do not worry if you can’t find her just follow the tourist busses or the rest of the walking tourist.

Amalienborg palace and the Marble Church

AMALIENBORG PALACE

Amalienborg Palace is the residence of the Danish Royal family and you might be lucky while visiting that the Danish flag is up because that means that the Queen is at home. Also find time to watch the changing of The Royal Guard which happens every day at 12.00 noon.

STRØGET: THE MAIN SHOPPING STREET

If you're in the mood for shopping or picking up a few souvenirs, the best place to go is Copenhagen’s main shopping street – Strøget. One of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets, Strøget stretches 1.1 kilometres from City Hall Square to Kongens Nytorv and includes Frederiksberggade, Nygade, Vimmelskaftet, and Østergade.

At the Kongens Nytorv end, you’ll find luxury brands such as Hermès, Prada, Max Mara, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Mulberry. For more budget-friendly options, head toward City Hall Square, where shops like H&M, Vero Moda and Zara await.

Strøget offers more than just shopping – the side streets are filled with charming sights, historic buildings, and lively street performers that make your shopping stroll a true Copenhagen experience.
